Dr. Polinger comes to Windy Knoll Farm

Today marked a big event in our AKC Golden Retriever Puppies’ young lives! Dr. Polinger, our wonderful vet, made an afternoon trip out to Windy Knoll Farm to give a thorough exam to each one of our adorable young’uns, making sure of their vitality and health! The sun cast pretty patterns of light through the shady leaves of the large maple tree, while the puppies gave enthusiastic greetings with their little voices as each one received his check up.

How do you do?

Betsy’s Little Red Collar Boy greeted Dr. Polinger politely and gravely, with an obliging step up on to the scale for the first part of the check-up. Every last one of the puppies remained calm, well mannered, and submissive under the careful hands of our vet.

Some of them were a little more curious, a few a bit more timid and nervous…and some couldn’t have been more relaxed about the whole experience!

This little guy couldn’t have been less concerned while awaiting his vaccination.

First came weight in time. With nineteen pups, we had a weight range of between 5 and 7.5 lbs. Yes, their still just babies at barely seven weeks old – but even so, they’ve grown and developed so much over the last two weeks!

I know, not everyone likes their weight made public!

Our vet Dr. Polinger then made a thorough check of the entire puppy, her quick, efficient hands moving firmly and gently over the soft, fluffy golden fur, and warm, plump body.

Hi Sweetie. Let's see how you are.

Yes, it’s a little awkward, but even those ears need a professional examination!

Meanwhile, Betsy’s pups await their turns in the “holding pen,” watching the proceedings with bright curious eyes.

And Jenny’s pups, who had the privilege of going first, are equally anxious to keep track of the happenings of their fellow canines from their own secure waiting place.

Even the ending aspect of the check-up, their first shot, hardly phased the puppies.

Cheryl, our neighbor, fellow dog lover, and our personal dog-sitter, popped over to watch the proceedings and give a hand. She has special reason to be particularly interested, as one of these little cuties is going to be her own!

At the end of the afternoon, we were so glad to have nineteen whole, healthy, happy … and very tired little pups! They were quite ready to refresh themselves with a meal, and curl up for a long snooze.

Our many thanks to Dr. Polinger and her husband Steve for their hard work ensuring our little goldens are thriving!

The Way A Welcome Should Be

AKC Golden Retrievers welcome us home
Betsy’s Puppies saying “Hello.”

Most dogs love their people. They thrive on the companionship and relationship of their human masters. Golden Retrievers in particular just love us, manifesting this by their enthusiasm in our presence and constant desire for our attention and pleasure. Even our six week old puppies are already well established lovers of humanity!

Upon our return home this afternoon from Jonathan’s birthday adventure, we were welcomed home in the most enthusiastic way. Nineteen little puppy tails nearly wagged off while nineteen plump little bodies came tumbling excited over to the fence edge,  a happy little growl or bark sounded out here and there among them, eagerly giving us our welcome home.

Golden Betsy: Hero of the day!

Our Golden Betsy

Golden Betsy: Worth more than gold

I’ve always know that our AKC Golden Betsy’s sweet, nurturing spirit is part of what makes her such a good mother and wonderful Golden Retriever. She proved today, though, that she goes above and beyond in her diligence and care of her young ones, and that she’s got spunk and courage when she needs it!

As usual, we headed off to church for the morning, leaving the dogs and puppies fed, watered, and in their respective pens. Betsy has the privilege of remaining free, as she doesn’t take undue advantage of that situation when we are absent. Upon our return home some time later, everything appeared to be just fine. Cheryl, our neighbor, showed up just minutes afterward, however, and related the following story:

She was visiting along with some of her family when she noticed that Betsy was making an unusual commotion in our yard, barking and whining as she repeatedly hurried from the puppy pen where her puppies reside, just past our mailbox, onto Cheryl’s lawn. When that unusual behavior continued, Cheryl began to wonder aloud if anything was amiss. Her son commented that he thought he saw some puppies out of the pen. Cheryl kindly came over to investigate – and sure enough, there were four of Betsy’s plump little gold puppies romping on the grass OUTSIDE the pen. A small break in the fence provided them with the perfect path to their “freedom.” With Betsy to notice the dilemma, however, they had little opportunity to stray far! Betsy knew she was on her own since we were gone, so inbetween carefully herding the migrant pups back towards the safety of their pen, she’d taken pains to inform her next closest source of help, Cheryl, of her need for help!

I was quite proud of our Betsy when heard of what she’d done! It’s just like the “story book” dogs – only it was for real, and it was our Betsy!

Good Girl, Betsy!

Puppy Visitors!

Windy Knoll Farm is situated on a lovely dirt road, with lovely neighbors round about! We’re always glad when the neighbor folks show up and we can share our delightful little puppies with them! It’s very hard to tell who has more fun – the puppies or the people!  We had lots of puppy visitors all at once this time.

A visit with our AKC Golden Pups
Serious discussion occurred in the puppy visitors nursery as pups were rocked, romped with, cuddled, and analyzed by a delightful group of children and adults!

Lots of proper socialization at a young age sets a good foundation for a pups future life. These pups sure get to experience a great deal of that, beginning with ourselves and our own children, and sometimes extending to our neighbors and any other visitors we may have – because who can resist a soft, cuddly, playful ball of cuteness?!

All of our young visitors today did a great job handling the puppies, and talked with animation of the cuteness, sweetness, cuddliness, and playfulness of each individual! I suspect that more than one of the children would have gladly carted a pup or two home had that been a possibility!

This little girl just adored the puppies, and a number of them got to cuddle with her in the stroller. She did an excellent job snuggling them!

It’s hard to tell who is more content here – the little puppy or the loving gal.

I think, perhaps, the puppies were just a little tired out from all the excitement and fun of their visitors this morning, for they curled up for a long rest right after everyone’s departure! I also think that they couldn’t have been more satisfied with their special guests!

A Walk at Windy Knoll Farm

We've been pretty busy with these adorable pups...

We’ve been pretty busy with these adorable pups…

Feeding pups, playing with pups, worming pups, cleaning puppy supplies, cuddling pups – there’s a lot to the everyday care and enjoyment of these special little goldens! But occasionally, it’s time to take a break and focus on the adult dogs who just might be a little envious of all the attention showered on the littlest members of our canine family! Today proved a perfect opportunity to enjoy the beauty of a mild summer morning and our quiet dirt road together with Betsy and Polly on a walk at Windy Knoll Farm.

A Walk at Windy Knoll Farm

Little Mary walks our golden retriever Betsy

Mary Grace and Betsy shared a leisurely start to the walk, while Polly,  who is, after all, just a seven month old pup herself, was ready for adventure. After a ways, the responsibility of walking even so sweet and gentle a dog as Betsy became rather serious for two year old Mary, who was decided to hand off the leash to Mama.

Our Golden Retriever AKC Betsy and Polly take a walk

Once we made it past the temptation of our immediate friendly neighbors (because Betsy and Polly, being goldens, can hardly resist saying a friendly hello to one and all), leashes came off and then the adventure really began ! Betsy is happy to trot along with the crowd, while Polly finds it very exciting to explore here and there, dashing back and forth with her nose in constant action.

Polly thinks Vermont is a perfect place for a golden retriever

However, she is happy to stop in the midst of her adventure and enjoy the gentle pats that Mary bestows upon her.

Betsy is also eager to stay at my side for her own spoiling!

Beautiful fields often stretch on either side of our road, lush with tall, green grass. Even staid, motherly Betsy joined in a game of romps with delighted Polly, who bounded and chased to her hearts content.

Over two miles later, we turn back in at our own driveway, with sun kissed, windblown, happy, and tired children and dogs. And guess what sight greets our eyes?

Don’t worry, little pups! Your turn for walks is coming right up just as fast as you are growing!

AKC Golden Retriever Puppies

Betsy’s AKC Golden Retriever Puppies are getting bigger every day! They have had an eventful week, which has included their eye’s opening, and their rapid progression from crawling about their pen to stumbling about, to actually walking around now, and eagerly greeting us when we enter their premises! They are finding their little voices, as well, and a delightful series of little growls, barks, grunts and squeals often chorus out when they are awake.

AKC Dark Red Golden Betsy With PuppiesAKC Dark Red Golden PuppiesThe puppies also enjoyed their first experience of being outdoors one warm day when we cleaned out their pen. Some took their adventure enthusiastically, exploring the new feel of fresh, soft grass beneath their little plump bodies. Most must have found it tiring, as they soon collapsed in an unconcerned heap to sleep away yet again! We took advantage of their slumbers to get the cleaning of their pen done!

Children Adding Bedding Cleaning Puppy Pen

I had two good helpers to get the job done quickly! From removing the littered bedding to spraying down with vinegar, to spreading a fresh layer of soft, fragrant wood shavings, Mary Grace and Jonathan lent their helping hands. When needing a break from those tasks, they gladly took on the job of cuddling some of the pups! :o)

And when the pens were fresh and clean and the sleeping pups returned to their slumbers in their soft clean bedding, who wouldn’t want to grab scrub brush and water and splash away while washing the dog bowls and water buckets!?

And of course, we couldn’t forget the daddy of all the cute pups around here. Shep enjoyed one of his favorite activities  –  a good brushing out – while relaxing on the lawn.

So there you have a glimpse into the pup’s life here on Windy Knoll Farm this past week! Sometimes, taking care of pups is just a nonchalant, relaxed experience….

…Other times, such as when you have the responsibility of keeping two puppies soothed and sleeping, it becomes a more earnest task.

Either way, though, it is sure to be fun and rewarding!
