All puppies, including Henry and Ellamae’s darling 10 week old AKC pups pictured above, present some unwanted antics and mischievous habits. It is easy to react with frustration to puppy misbehavior; however, there is no need to despair. The following are 2 common puppy challenges and proactive ways to address these problems.
#1 Destructive chewing. Puppies can naturally turn just about anything into chew toys and leave a trail ruined items behind them. Before simply throwing them a bone and scolding, take time to consider why they are chewing. Is it boredom, separation anxiety, stress, or attention seeking? Put in a place a plan to redirect this behavior. Provide legitimate chewing options. Incorporate positive reinforcement. Ensure sufficient exercise. Specifically teach the “leave it” command. Be careful not to confuse your puppy by allowing them to chew some household items and then not others that are similar.
#2 Excessive Barking. Just as with chewing, puppies are naturally vocal and like to bark. Continuous yapping grates on nerves and ears and doesn’t bring out the best in us. Instead of shutting your puppy away or trying to out shout them, think through what may be prompting the barking. Is it something in the surrounding environment that is genuinely stressing or exciting-such as other dogs or human activity? In these contexts, moderate barking is not a negative response. Environmental factors be can mitigated/managed. Don’t leave a puppy unattended outside with direct views of neighborhood activity. Socialize your puppy through frequent interaction with guests and other dogs. Is your puppy’s barking initiated by boredom? Is it seeking attention? Ignore attention barking. Teach the quiet command. If you designate your dog’s crate/kennel as “quiet” space, reinforce non-barking behavior. Use positive outlets such as exercise and toys. Remember to schedule direct puppy time.
