A Look at the Breed’s History
The Golden Mountain Dog is a designer hybrid, so it doesn’t carry centuries of its own lineage. Most of its deliberate breeding happened between the 1970s and the early 2000s. The two breeds behind it, however, have wonderful stories of their own, and together they explain exactly why this dog turns out the way it does.
Burnese Mountain Dog is a relatively modern designer crossbreed, combining the Golden Retriever with the Bernese Mountain Dog. Breeders began developing the cross in North America in the early-to-mid 2000s, aiming to blend the Golden’s friendly, eager-to-please temperament with the Bernese’s striking tricolor coat and gentle, family-oriented nature. Today it’s prized as a large, affectionate family companion known for its plush coat, sturdy build, and good-natured disposition.
The Golden Retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 1860s as the ideal gundog, patient, intelligent, and gentle enough to retrieve waterfowl all day, which is where the Golden Shepherd gets its friendly, eager-to-please personality.
