Maggie came to us last winter, and it didn’t take long for her to become the dog everyone looks for first. She is friendly and outgoing, confident without being pushy, and never happier than on a long walk through the meadows and woods. She also has one bright blue eye, which is unusual for a Bernese Mountain Dog and gives her a look you don’t forget.
This will be Maggie’s first litter, and it is a first for us as well. Until now, all of our golden mountain puppies in Maine have come from a Bernese father and a golden mother. This time Maggie, our Bernese girl, is the mother, and the father is Freddy, our cheerful English Cream golden who has been gentle with our children since he was a puppy himself.
Golden mountain puppies from a first generation pairing like this one usually come in a mix of the classic tricolor of black, rust and white, and black with white markings on the chest, face and feet. They tend to have long, soft, wavy coats and grow into big dogs. Whether any of them inherit Maggie’s blue eye is anyone’s guess, and we will certainly be watching. With her outgoing spirit and Freddy’s happy nature, we expect friendly, sociable puppies who love being part of whatever their family is doing.
