How to Avoid Tummy Troubles With Your New Puppy

Daisy and George’s 3 week old puppies are growing cuter by the day. Each of the 6 AKC Golden Retriever pups also have growing appetites. As a lactating mother, Daisy receives a nutritious combination of premium dry kibbles, high protein wet food, and organic low-heat dehydrated dog food. As the puppies mature and are weaned, they are gradually introduced to the same quality fare. Sometimes puppies develop tummy trouble and digestive issues, especially during weaning process and transition to their new homes. There are some simple steps you can take to avoid tummy troubles with your new puppy.

First, it is important to maintain product consistency. A test and see approach should not be tried with puppies with regards to their diet. Sudden changes in formula can lead to diarrhea and loose stool but feeding the same type of dog food will support a stronger digestive system.

Second, new dog food should be researched carefully and then introduced gradually. It is is beneficial to keep the same food during weeks 6-12 of a puppy’s development. Three to six months usually bring a reduction in the number of daily feedings. Around 12 months, depending on whether a puppy undergoes spaying/neutering, the frequency and type of food can be adjusted.

Third, given the fact that puppies tend to easily pickup parasites (worms) that can can cause Giardia and other related intestinal issues, it is wise to follow a deworming/parasite protocol. Consult your vet for recommended treatments. We use Kochi Free from Amber Naturalz as our primary protocol and have been very satisfied.

It is heartwarming to watch a puppy chowing down on good food. If you have feeding questions or are uncertain about your puppy’s nutritional needs, please reach out. We would be glad to share Windy Knoll Goldens 12+ years of expertise and insight with you.
