What Makes an English Cream Golden Retriever Special?

Contrary to claims, English Cream Golden Retrievers are not actually a separate dog breed; they are simply a beautiful cream/pale white version of a Golden Retriever. While they retain the same wonderful demeanor and gentle temperament that all golden retrievers known for, English Cream Golden Retrievers do have special characteristics. 11 month old AKC Lily from Windy Knoll Goldens in central Maine (pictured above) is a striking example of these distinct features.

English Creams exhibit broad heads, wide muzzles, level backlines, and robust (stocky) builds. This is derived from a Scottish breeding heritage that emphasized hunting, swimming, and outdoor utility. English Creams also have soulful round eyes with close set ears.

English Creams have impressive double coats. The dense water/weather resistant outer layer melds with the thick insulating undercoat. Like all Golden Retrievers, these coats are soft and handsome; however, they do shed and require significant grooming.

English Creams are energetic and athletic. AKC Freddy of Windy Knoll Goldens loves to chase balls, sprint across the meadow, and climb barriers. Several of his progeny have developed reputations as excellent swimmers.

English Cream Golden Retrievers are great representations of the golden line. While not “rare” or “premium”, Windy Knoll Goldens’ Creams have an excellent bloodline and thorough health screenings.
