Best Breeding Practices for Healthy and Happy Golden Retriever Puppies

Healthy and happy golden retriever puppies, like Pretty Pickle and King Charles’ litter, are the result of careful breeding practices. When breeding our AKC golden retrievers, we follow four important protocols: genetic and health clearance, pedigree, conditioning care, and puppy socialization/development.

All of our breeding dams and sires undergo comprehensive genetic testing and healthy checks. We utilize Embark DNA testing to screen for common conditions including DM (disease that affects the spinal cord), ICH (a serious skin disorder), and PRA (retinal breakdown that leads to blindness). Each breeding retriever is examined by a certified veterinarian for hip and elbow dysplasia using the Penn Hip process. Heart, eyes, and general health are also evaluated. All of our breeding dogs have received a clear genetic and health report.

Pedigree plays an important role in our breeding. The purebred lineage of the dam and the sire are considered, and matches are made based on temperament and breed standards. We select a dam and sire with traits that complement one another and improve the pedigree. Each of our breeding dog’s pedigrees is available on our website.

Conditioning is our long-term care for our breeding males and females. This involves specific nutrition, NU Vet supplements, regular exercise, and deworming. Females are bred when sexually mature and have exhibited successive cycles (usually around 2 years old). This ensures they are ready for the stress of pregnancy and lactation.

Once puppies are born, we prioritize their development and socialization. Puppies receive ENS (early neurological stimulation) during the first several weeks after birth. They are gradually exposed to new stimuli and environments between 2 and 8 weeks. Deworming and vaccines are administered on schedule and as necessary.
