Preparing for Your Puppy’s Arrival
Naturally active? Check. Highly curious? Check. Love to chew? Check. Given that golden retriever puppies are full of life and energy, it is a wise idea to prepare ahead for your new puppy’s arrival. The following are 5 simple ways to “puppy proof” your property and create a safe comfortable environment for your new family member.
Puppy Proof Tip #1
Remove and/or conceal wires and electronic cables. Puppies love to chew and tug, making long dangling cords a prime target. In areas that your puppy will frequent, ensure that wires are out of reach/sight.
Puppy Proof Tip #2
Adjust or move your houseplants. Many houseplants are toxic to pets and should not be on the same level or in the same space as your puppy.
Puppy Proof Tip #3
Prevent access to off limit spaces. Use pet gates (similar to baby gates) to block doorways, stairs, bedrooms, or other rooms that your puppy should not be in. Check outdoor fences and garden gates. Latches should fasten securely, and fencing should be fully intact with no holes, openings, or gaps.
Puppy Proof Tip #4
Identify and remove/discard choking hazards. Items such as rubber bands, coins, jewelry, plastic packaging, and small cushions can get lodged in your puppy’s throat. It is far better to be safe than sorry.
Puppy Proof Tip #5
Safeguard all foods, cleaning chemicals, and cosmetics. These products can be safely kept in sturdy plastic containers and stored in secure cabinets, higher shelves, or locked closets.
Peace of Mind
With a small investment of time and a dose of common sense, your house will be puppy proofed and you can enjoy peace of mind. After your puppy has arrived and acclimated to the new environment, re-evaluate your plan. Pinpoint any changes that need to be made.
