Given their affectionate energetic natures, golden retrievers and kids can be the best of friends. It is wonderful to experience the joy of your child bonding with your golden retriever. It is also helpful to understand the dynamics of this relationship and facilitate healthy family interaction between golden retrievers and kids.
There are a number of benefits that children gain from interacting with a golden retriever. It gives young people the opportunity to learn to treat animals with care and empathy. This includes respecting a dog’s space, “reading” a dog’s body language, and maintaining appropriate boundaries. It offers companionship-golden retrievers are excellent non-critical playmates. Children also learn responsibility in the daily care of a golden retriever and can participate in the training process. The AKC offers a specific program, Juniors, that promotes activities for young people in the sphere of dog sportsmanship.
There are also benefits from child/dog interaction for your golden retriever. It provides a high degree of socialization. It increases your dog’s playtime and problem-solving situations. Most importantly, it solidifies the focus of your dog’s loyalty and connection.
Several considerations should be kept in mind as you build a healthy bond between your child and your golden retriever. (1) Start early. Puppies bond with and respond better to humans when connected from a young age. (2) Supervise/manage interactions. Educate your children on your dog’s behavior. Train your dog to play safely. Intervene and explain when necessary. (3) Set reasonable time limits. Too much play and interaction can lead to frustration and conflict on both the part of the child and the puppy.
