Whether short outings or longer expeditions, road trips can be great fun for the whole family. Don’t leave your golden retriever out of these special adventures! Before hitting the highway, check out these 7 tips for road trips with your dog.

Tips for Road Trips With Dogs

  • Research your route. Take note of specific dog policies for lodging and other places you plan to visit. Pin dog-friendly parks, rest stops, and community areas. Use  an app, like BringFido or Bark Happy, to help streamline this process.
  • Verify your dog’s ID. Make sure your microchip contact information is up to date. Save a copy of your dog’s medical records on your phone (including rabies vaccination). Ensure your dog’s registration tags are securely attached to his collar.
  • Pack essentials: food and water bowl, secure food storage container, treats, stash of waste/poop bags, leash, favorite chew/throw toy.
  • Organize cleaning and grooming supplies. Be sure to include a quick-drying dog towel, small garbage and Ziplock bags, grooming brush, spray cleaner, and seat covers.
  • Stow your dog’s first aid kit in an easily accessible location.
  • Set up a dedicated travel space. Dog’s crates fill this need well and provide a secure comfortable space in hotel rooms, RV’s, tents, or other overnight lodging. If space is an issue, consider a collapsible crate.
  • Plan for a few bumps in the road. Stop for fresh air and exercise even if you are behind schedule. Bring a ginger chew or CBD treat to help with motion sickness/anxiety. Play your dog’s favorite calming music!
