At 5 weeks old, Daisy’s litter of six delightful golden retriever puppies are an excellent example of canine genetics. All dogs receive two copies of every inherited gene, one from each of the parents. In simple terms, different versions of the same genes can cause variations in protein production. This affects the phenotype or physical characterstics that offspring have.
King George has a distinct white blaze on his chest. This distinctive marking results from a dominant gene. Dominant genes are always expressed or passed on. Each of Daisy and George’s puppies have a small white marking. Interestingly enough, this mark is located on the top of their heads. However, the darker colored pups also have a white chest blaze.
Coat color, coat texture, and coat pattern are all determined by the expression of gene copies passed on from the parents. It is fascinating to observe these expressions in each of our litters and the unique traits that each puppy gains.
