Brad and Violet’s eight AKC golden retriever puppies have entered a delightful stage. At 4 weeks old, they are rapidly developing consciousness of the world around them: smelling, seeing, tasting, and listening intently. Here are some of the most exciting social milestones we have recently observed.
Puppy play is taking off. With new baby teeth emerging, they are nipping at their fellow sibling’s ears and legs. Puppy biting for play is termed inhibited biting and is a natural part of their social interaction.
Social structure is being sorted out. Puppies are asserting themselves and recognizing social responses. Each litter mate is developing a basic understanding of their “place” within the pack.
Communication has been initiated. Friendly barks and energetic growls are directed at siblings and human handlers alike. Many emotions are vocalized.
Some independence has been gained. The puppies no longer seek their mother at every waking moment and are okay when left on their own for a while.
All of these interactions are fascinating, not to mention very cute. Follow along with us as these sweet golden retriever pups continue to grow up on our beautiful farm in central Maine.
