Synthetic Chew Toys
While edible chews for dogs provide a tasty chewing experience, they are not always the best option for every situation. Non-edible synthetic chews offer some distinct advantages. Typically made from materials like nylon, rubber, or plastic, they come in a range of hardnesses, sizes, and textures. These artificial bones don’t splinter easily and are good for keeping your dog busy without adding extra calories. Available odor free or flavored, some can even be stuffed with actual treats or frozen. Most synthetic chews can be cleaned/washed off. Finally, non-edible chew toys save money. While the initial purchase price is often higher than an edible bone, these chews last much longer than a once and done meal.
Chew Toys are Great for All Typers of Chewers
Synthetic bones are well-suited for power chewers. Aggressive chewers can return to these bones again and again. Softer options are available for puppies and senior dogs. Some popular manufactures, including Nylabone and KONG, provide chewing guidance charts.
All-Natural Chew Toy Option
Some vets and animal experts believe that rubber and nylon products are detrimental as chew toys as well as environmentally unviable. Better Bone is an all-natural, eco-friendly, ultra-hard chew toy with lots of positive reviews.
Chew Toys to Avoid
Rope chews, made of braided cotton or synthetic strands, are not recommended. Although great for interactive play, they can be torn apart and fabric pieces ingested, possibly causing blockages in your dog’s stomach. They are also not as effective at cleaning teeth as other bone materials.
While some dogs can play with plush chew toys without any problem, overall, these glorified stuffed animals are not worthwhile chewing objects. Often, they contain harmful chemicals, toxic materials, and can tear apart easily. Stuffing can end up in your dog’s intestines with serious health consequences.
