New Pictures and ENS Exercises for Susie’s 6

Eat, Sleep, and ENS

In addition to lots of shared naps and contented suckling, Susies’s six golden retriever puppies started their ENS exercises. Also known as biosensory therapy, ENS (early neurological stimulation) is a series of gentle exercises conducted once every 24 hours from days 3-16 in a young puppy’s life. These mild stressors enhance neurological development, build resilence, and strengthen overall health.

ENS Exercises

Originally developed by the U.S. military for their “Super Dog” training program, this time sensitive therapy focuses on the unique opportunity to impact the rapid brain growth in puppies during weeks 1 and 2. Each puppy receives a sequence of 5 short stimulations that activate healthy neurological responses.

ENS Sequence

Tactile Stimulation: the handler gently tickles the puppy between its toes, using a slender object (often a Q-tip). Duration: 3-5 seconds.

Head Erect: the handler positions the puppy in an upright position supported by both hands. Duration: 3-5 seconds.

Head Down: the handler points the puppy’s head directly down and carefully maintains this position with both hands. Duration: 3-5 seconds.

Supine Position: the handler rotates the puppy onto its back and then supports the puppy’s spine with the palm of her hands. Duration: 3-5 seconds.

Thermal Stimulation: the handler dips the puppy’s paws in cold water or places them on a chilled towel. Duration: 3-5 seconds.

ENS Benefits

Exposure to these mild controlled stressors has significant effects. Researchers have identified improved cardiovascular performance, stronger adrenal glands, increased stress tolerance, and greater resistance to diseases/sickness. Puppy behavior is also positively impacted. Puppies receiving ENS exhibit more confidence and curiosity in new environments.

ENS + Love

While important, ENS is not a substitute for regular handling, socialization, and bonding. All Windy Knoll Golden puppies, including Susie’s, are held, petted, and conversed with frequently. These loving interactions provide the crucial foundation for a well-adjusted golden retriever puppy.
