All puppies, including Ellamae’s one week old litter, are born quite helpless. Blind/deaf with a very limited sense of smell, they are completely dependent on their mother for survival. Her milk, especially the rich initial colostrum, is essential for their nourishment and weight gain. Puppies at this stage even need their mother to help stimulate them to pee and poo. With her eight new pups, Ellamae shines as an amazing momma dog.
Ellamae focuses on what every amazing momma dog does: she nurtures. She keeps all of her puppies close and warm. She feeds round the clock. She licks and cleans her puppies relentlessly. She builds bonds through gentle contact and reassuring presence. She communicates with her puppies through body language and vocalization. She ignores outside distractions and activities.
Ellamae is empowered by strong maternal instincts. Mother dogs develop several hormones that enable them to care so well for their pups.
