Why Zzz’s are Very Imporant for your Puppy

Sleep Matters

In a busy and exhausting world, all of us benefit from restful sleep and our dogs are no different. Sleep is essential for a dog’s physical health, cognitive development, and emotional stability. Sleep allows a dog to mend cells/repair damaged tissue, moderate the immune system, and regulate hormones that affect blood pressure and heart rate. Rest increases a dog’s memory effectiveness and helps to maintain alertness and focus. Sleep also reduces canine anxiety and improves your dog’s mood. So just like us, dogs really need their sleep.

Sleep is Vital for a Puppy

During its first year, a puppy develops quickly and experiences rapid growth spurts over a relatively short period of time. For these cute balls of energy, brain engagement and energy usage are off the charts! Consequently, a puppy need lots of sleep. The average adult golden retriever may sleep about 13 hours per day, but with puppies, this jumps to 18 hours a day. In fact, during the first four weeks of its life, a puppy does little else but sleep.

Healthy Sleep Habits

A puppy will normally sleep after playing, exercising, or outdoor activities. Although mature dogs tend to sleep most during nighttime hours, puppies will sleep at intervals throughout the day. Despite common observations that puppies can sleep just about anywhere, it is worthwhile to have a quiet space for your puppy to relax and sleep. This can be a crate, dog bed, or comfortable shaded kennel. It should be noted that puppies are social animals. They often sleep better when in close proximity to a litter mate or trusted companion. Make sure that your puppy’s sleep space while quiet and cozy, isn’t that far away from you. Cuddling and snuggling with your puppy are important; however, it is best to leave your puppy alone when they are sleeping.

Scheduling Puppy Nap Time

When your puppy is ready for a nap, let her settle in. Don’t be surprised at the variety of sleep times that your puppy may choose. A puppy may nap for 30 minutes or doze off for an hour plus. Generally, a puppy will rest after eating and exercise. Factor this into your schedule and be flexible.

Happy Puppy Dreams

It is wonderful that such a simple act as sleep provides so much benefit for your puppy. We would encourage our pet parents to follow their puppies’ examples and get an adequate amount of sleep. It truly is life-transforming. If you happen to snap a photo of your puppy snoozing, please share it with us. We would love to see all of your cute happy sleepers!
