Betty’s Puppies Are 3 Weeks Old

Big things are happening here at Windy Knoll Goldens, and we cannot wait to share them! Watching a golden retriever puppy 3 weeks after birth is pure joy, because this is the week everything wakes up. Betty’s babies have their eyes open, their ears are tuning in, and those tiny legs are finally holding them up. They are curious, wobbly, and sweeter than ever.

Golden Retriever Puppy 3 Weeks: What’s Happening Now

This is the fun part. A golden retriever puppy 3 weeks old is right at the start of what breeders call the socialization period, and the changes come fast. Their eyes are fully open now, and their ears have opened too, so they are hearing our voices for the very first time.

According to the American Kennel Club, this is when puppies begin to stand, take their first wobbly steps, and interact with their littermates. Betty’s pups are doing exactly that. They push up on shaky legs, tumble into one another, and are starting to wag those tiny tails.

Their little baby teeth are just beginning to peek through too. Before long they will start lapping at their first soft meals, and the play will really begin. It is one of the sweetest stages to witness, and it goes by so quickly.

• Eyes wide open. Those cloudy blue newborn eyes are open and beginning to focus on light, movement, and the shapes of their littermates.
• Ears switched on. Hearing kicks in this week, so soft sounds and gentle voices start to register for the very first time.
• First wobbly steps. Legs that could only paddle a week ago are now lifting little bellies off the ground for shaky, determined steps.
• Baby teeth arriving. Tiny needle teeth begin to break through the gums, a sure sign weaning is not far off.
• The first tail wags. Nothing melts us faster than a three week old puppy giving a happy little wag.

Feeding and Weaning at This Stage

Right now, Betty is still doing most of the work, and her milk is meeting all of her puppies’ needs. A golden retriever puppy 3 weeks old nurses often and sleeps hard in between, which is exactly how it should be.

In the coming days we will introduce a warm, soupy gruel of puppy food softened with formula. Those first messy meals are always a delight to watch, with more food ending up on paws and noses than in tummies at first. Weaning is a gradual process, and we let each puppy set the pace!
