5 Tips for Successful Dog Socialization

On Saturday August 10, starting at 9:30 at WKG’s first meetup/reunion, we will be hosting dozens of goldens. As we look forward to welcoming all of these wonderful goldens and socializing, here are some important dog etiquette tips to be aware of when attending an event like this. While goldens are generally relaxed and super friendly, each dog has its own personality and responds differently to new environments.

  1. Ensure that your dog is under control. Please keep them leashed unless playing fetch, swimming, etc. It helps to practice obedience skills ahead of time.
  2. Respect other dogs’ space. Check with the owner before allowing your dog to greet and interact with another dog. Back up or remove your dog if necessary.
  3. Observe your dog’s body language. Body language and posture will often signal whether a dog is calm and comfortable, tense and aggressive, or fearful and overwhelmed.
  4. Expect your dog and other dogs to be excited and high energy. Maintaining a calm demeanor will reassure your dog and facilitate positive interaction.
  5. Reinforce and reward good behavior. Please check with others before offering treats or food to their dogs.

If there is a situation that is challenging or you need help with, inform the WKG staff/family. We truly intend it to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.
