Golden Mountain Puppies Are Finally Here!

We could hardly resist the opportunity! When the snow began falling here on Windy Knoll Farm in earnest last week — the big, unhurried flakes that settle over the fields and frost every branch and fence post — we knew that our handsome King Henry simply had to have his moment! And what a moment it was. If you have ever wondered what a dark red golden retriever looks like set against a fresh Maine snowstorm, well — we hope these photos give you some idea. In our humble opinion, very few things in this world are as beautiful as that rich, glistening mahogany coat against a canvas of pure white snow!
Henry, to his credit, was a thoroughly willing subject. He has always carried himself with a certain quiet confidence, and a little falling snow was certainly not going to ruffle him. He stepped out into it as though the whole scene had been arranged for his benefit — which, truthfully, it had!
It will come as no surprise to anyone who knows the breed that Henry took to the snow with great enthusiasm. What started as a dignified photoshoot quickly gave way to a rather exuberant romp — tongue out, tail wagging, bounding through the drifts with the kind of unrestrained joy that only a golden retriever can produce. Those of us watching from the sidelines found it very difficult not to join in! New England winters are not always easy to love, but watching Henry tear through the snow with that great happy grin of his has a way of changing one’s perspective entirely! He lives a wonderful double life — spending time with a devoted family who absolutely adores him, and returning to Windy Knoll Goldens to be part of our breeding program. The puppies he has given us have been some of our very finest, and we never tire of watching his personality and coat pass on to the next generation!

Days like this one are among the reasons we love what we do here in Maine. The snow falls, the fields go quiet, and one very handsome golden retriever reminds us all over again why we fell in love with this breed in the first place! There is a beauty to farm life in winter that is easy to miss if you are rushing about — but Henry never rushes.
He simply stands there in the middle of it all, perfectly at home, perfectly content, snowflakes catching on his whiskers and his warm brown eyes taking everything in with that gentle golden steadiness that never changes!
