Field and Show Golden Retrievers
Within the American Golden Retriever breed line, there is an important distinction: field and show dogs. Each type has been bred and developed for specific purposes. Field goldens have been developed for active work roles while show goldens have been developed for conformity to breed standards and physical appearance. Both types of goldens make excellent pets; however, it is worth comparing and contrasting the key differences. This can help make an informed decision about what type of golden is best for you.
Physical Differences
Field goldens are generally leaner and more athletic in build than show goldens. They tend to have wedge shaped heads and longer snouts. Show goldens have a more robust larger build with a square shaped head. Although not always the case, field goldens’ coat shades run darker and redder while show goldens favor lighter honey-colored coats. As suits their working lines, field goldens have shorter thinner coats that require less care while show goldens have longer fuller coats with more feathering.
Personality Differences
Field goldens have higher levels of energy and stamina. This drive manifests in a passion for retrieving: hours spent chasing balls or in the water retrieving sticks. They also love agility courses and water challenges. They thrive on an active routine and benefit from frequent exercise and constructive tasks. Show goldens are more relaxed and people oriented. They enjoy social interaction and are easily trained in basic obedience skills. Given the stability and emotional intelligence of show goldens, they often function well as therapy and service dogs. Field goldens are more suited for an active outdoor lifestyle.
