Can You Identify the 3 Types of Golden Retrievers?

Short History of Golden Retrievers

Now well-known and easily identified, the Golden Retriever breed originated in Scotland in the mid 1800’s. It was initially bred for hunting waterfowl in harsh weather conditions. Gradually, the breed’s friendly temperament, handsome appearance, and warm personality expanded ownership and it developed into the beloved family dog it now is. Within the Golden Retriever breed, there are three recognized types: American Golden Retriever, English (British) Golden Retriever, and Canadian Golden Retriever. While there are some minor distinctions in work ethic and personality, appearance, especially in coat color and physical build, is the major difference among these 3 types of golden retrievers.

American Golden Retriever

The American Golden Retriever has a coat that is denser, longer, and wavier. Predominantly honey colored (true golden), it generally has more feathering on the chest, neck, and tail. Eyes are typically almond-shaped. The standard male can stand 23-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weight between 65-75 lbs while females stand 21-22 inches tall and weigh between 55-65 lbs. The American Golden Retriever is noted for its energy and athleticism.

British Golden Retriever

The British (English) Golden Retriever has a lighter colored golden coat that can extend to a distinctive cream color. They are more muscular in build and slightly heavier but are not quite as tall.  They have notable large round eyes, a short/wider muzzle, and blocky forehead. Males stand 22-24 inches tall and weigh approximately 65-75 lbs. while females stand 20-22 inches tall and weigh between 50-70 lbs. There are a number of breeder reports that indicate fewer potential issues regarding common canine health conditions, especially cancer.

Canadian Golden Retriever

The Canadian Golden Retriever is taller/leaner than the other two types and generally has a thinner darker coat. Males stand 23-24 inches tall and weigh between 65-75 lbs. Females are slightly smaller. Canadian Golden Retrievers are versatile dogs but with a smaller breeding population than the other two types.
