How To Stop Puppy Biting In Just A Few Days!

Puppies are very mouthy. Teaching them to stop biting is simple and fast when it is done correctly and consistently. The method we use to stop puppy biting is called popping the grape: when a puppy bites your hand, it ends up biting its own lip, so it learns right away that biting people hurts. Pair that with plenty of chew toys and good things to chew on, and most puppies stop biting in just a few days!

Set The Boundary Early

Biting is a no-no, and your puppy should learn that the first day home. Setting that boundary on day one will set you up for a lifetime of success. A puppy that gets away with nipping at 8 weeks will still be doing it at 6 months, with bigger teeth and a stronger jaw. When every bite gets the same consequence, most puppies have the lesson figured out by the end of the first day.

How To Pop The Grape

The “grape” is the soft part of your puppy’s upper lip. When your puppy clamps down on your hand, use your fingers to press that lip in against its teeth, so the puppy bites down on its own lip. It feels the pinch of its own teeth, lets go, and connects biting you with getting bitten.

  1. Do it the moment teeth touch skin, every time, so the consequence comes from the bite itself.
  2. Press just firmly enough for your puppy to notice, then let go. Stay calm and quiet while you do it.
  3. Hand your puppy a chew toy right after, so it learns what it is allowed to bite.
  4. Make sure everyone in the house does it the same way.

We use this same boundary with the puppies in our training program. Poppy’s six weeks show what that program looks like.

Give Them Plenty Of Good Things To Chew

A teething puppy needs to chew, so give that urge somewhere to go. Keep a pile of chew toys around the house, including rubber toys you can freeze, and add good things to eat that take a while to chew, such as edible teething chews. A puppy that always has something better in its mouth has less reason to go after your hands, shoes or furniture.

Supervise chewing and throw out any toy that starts coming apart, so your puppy never swallows chunks or stuffing.

When Teething Makes Biting Worse

Puppy biting usually peaks at 3 to 4 months, when baby teeth start falling out to make room for 42 adult teeth. By about 6 months the baby teeth should all be gone. Drooling and small spots of blood on toys are normal during this stretch. If your puppy tries biting again while its gums are sore, pop the grape the same way and hand it a chew toy.
