We raise dark red field golden retrievers here in Bradford, Maine. Ours weigh around 65 pounds, love to swim, and are happiest out on a long walk or a hike. A field golden comes from lines bred for hunting and retrieving, and many of them carry the deepest red shades the breed has.

Field Golden vs English Golden
Goldens started as Scottish gundogs in the 1800s, and field lines have kept that working purpose. We raise both field goldens and English cream goldens, so we see the differences every day. Our field goldens are leaner and more athletic, with a longer muzzle, a shorter coat and less feathering on the legs and tail. Our English creams, like Freddy, are blockier, with a broader head and a fuller coat. Field goldens usually come in the darker shades, from deep gold to copper red, while English creams run from cream to light gold.
Both have the gentle, people-loving golden temperament. The field golden brings more stamina and a stronger drive to retrieve.

How Big Does a Field Golden Retriever Get?
Our field goldens weigh roughly 65 pounds full grown. The AKC breed standard calls for males at 23 to 24 inches and 65 to 75 pounds, and females at 21.5 to 22.5 inches and 55 to 65 pounds. A field golden tends to sit at the lean end of those ranges for its height.
Swimming, Walks and Hikes
Our field goldens love the water. The breed was developed to bring birds back from cold lakes and marshes, and ours will swim any chance they get. On dry days a long walk or a hike gives them the same outlet, and their lean build lets them keep going for miles.
The shorter coat helps outdoors too. There is less feathering for burrs and mud to catch in, and a brushing a couple of times a week handles the shedding.
Are Field Goldens Good Family Dogs?
A field golden fits well in a home with kids or with one active owner, as long as it gets out every day. A daily walk or swim is enough for ours, and on that routine they come inside and settle down quietly. A young field golden that misses its exercise will usually show it by chewing or getting into things.

Will My Puppy Be Dark Red?
Golden puppies darken as they grow, and the adult shade can take a year or two to settle. The ears are the best early guide, since a puppy’s ear color is usually close to its adult coat color. We cover the color in more detail in our post on the dark red golden retriever coat.
Our Dark Red Field Goldens
Bradford is our best-known dark red male, and many of our dark red puppies come from him. Acadia, shown in the photos above, is a slender, athletic female with a deep copper coat. You can meet the rest of our dogs on our Our Dogs page, and our upcoming dark red litters are listed on our current litters page.
